Biography

Chairman Marcello Banes was elected to the Board of Commissioners in 2016. Marcello is a life-long resident of Newton County and a graduate of Newton County High School. He is an ordained minister, active member of Springfield Baptist Church and was the Operations Manager of Banes Transport, LLC until 2017 when he joined the NC BOC.

He has been a business owner and community leader for more than 15 years who works diligently to keep Newton County citizens first.

“As a business owner and community leader for more than 15 years I have the acquired the knowledge and proficiency needed to be an effective Chairman of the Board of Commissioners,” Banes said. “Equally, as an ordained minister, I have worked closely with the community and am highly accustomed to working directly with citizens and county employees to provide support in resolving problems. From a managerial and leadership standpoint, my education has provided me with exceptional business and critical thinking abilities and skills to lead our county into becoming no longer separate but #OneNewton.”

Banes, who is a dedicated and loving family man, is married to Cheneeka Banes and has three daughters, Shakilra, Tamia, and Bailey. As a graduate of the esteemed Leadership Georgia Organization, he is also a board member of View Point Health, the Board of Health, Newton County Tomorrow, the Northeast Georgia Regional Council, and was the champion of the NEWFORCE program that assists in employing graduates of the RSAT and other job placement programs in the Newton County Detention Facility.

Within Newton County and his community, he is also a member of several other boards such as Industrial Development Authority (IDA), Joint Development Authority (JDA), Porter Foundation, the Newton County Domestic Violence Task Force, AIM Ministry with Springfield Baptist Church along with partnering with Action Ministries. He was honored to receive the Martin Luther King, Jr. “I Have a Dream Award” in 2021. Marcello has always said, "Serving" is one of the greatest selfless acts he proudly participates in.”

Although humbled by the awards and recognition, among his many accolades is included becoming the first African American sworn into the position of Newton County Board of Commissioners Chairman.

Among his recent accomplishments are being the first Chairman to champion the implementation of the first Strategic Plan of Newton County which includes our County Mission and Vision. Chairman Banes was also awarded the title of 2017 Newsmaker of the Year for Covington, Georgia by the Covington news and becoming a Certified County Commissioner by ACCG. Chairman Banes attributes his faith, prayer life, family, appreciation for diversity, and his commitment to unity and inclusion to the citizens of Newton County as his formula for success. One of his most important initiatives that is a growing is his vision and mantra of #OneNewton. It signifies that regardless of our differences, we can respect and embrace our differences while we continuously make Newton County an exceptional place to work, play and live.
