Newton County held its first of three groundbreakings set for this year for new fire stations on June 16. Station 8, located at 2345 Gum Creek Road, was approved by voters in the 2011 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) referendum.
Commissioners present, past and future were on hand, along with new fire recruits who will work at the new stations when they are built and open.
The total cost of the new station is $2.4 million with a combination of county fire tax, capital funds and $1,100,000 in SPLOST funds.
