Information re: Alcoholic Beverage Sales

The County is receiving a number of inquiries regarding the three alcoholic beverage referenda that were approved by the voters on November 6, 2012.  Approval of these referenda authorizes the County to regulate the sale of package sales of beer and wine on Sundays and the sale of distilled spirits by the drink.  To this end, the County has adopted a revised alcoholic beverage ordinance that will go into effect on January 1, 2013. (O-070312b O-070312b).  The County will also be considering zoning ordinance amendments that specify where by the drink sales will be permitted.

As provided by the Alcoholic Beverage ordinance, beginning January 1, 2013:

 ·         Those with package sale licenses will be permitted to sell beer and wine, by the package, between the hours of 12:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Sundays; and

·         Applications for a license to sell alcoholic beverages by the drink in appropriately zoned areas will be available from the Development Services Office.

Hays or her staff will not call Jurors that have failed to report for Jury Duty service and ask for personal information such as social security number, birth date, bank account number, or credit card information.  It has been reported scammers trying to commit identity theft have been contacting potential victims and telling them they failed to report for jury duty.  They ask for confidential information for "verification" purposes and if the information is refused they tell the potential victim a warrant will be issued for their arrest.  So far the scam has been reported in Michigan, Ohio, Texas, Arizona, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Oregon and Washington State. There have been no reports of this scam in the State of Georgia at the present time.  Please never give out your personal information to any court officer over the telephone.  The FBI is urging anyone who may receive a phone call regarding jury duty with the intent to commit identity theft to please contact your local FBI office at www.fbi.gov

Property Crimes

If you have been the victim of a property crime, the District Attorney’s Office will attempt to obtain restitution for you.  It is at the Judge’s discretion whether or not to award restitution.  Restitution includes, but is not limited to, hospital bills, repair bills for damaged or broken property, reimbursement for lost or stolen items, and court costs.  Proper documentation is required before the District Attorney’s office can ask that restitution be awarded.

If so ordered, the defendant will make payment to his or her probation officer who in turn will distribute the funds to the aggrieved parties.  Usually, a payment plan is established and the process for recovering money often takes months or years depending on the amount of restitution involved.

The District Attorney’s Office cannot guarantee the recovery of any personal property.  We will work with local law enforcement in an effort to do so; however we cannot make any guarantees.
